Finance Consultant

Employment Type: Contract (3 months)

Location: Fully Remote

Rate: $150-180/hr

Industry: SaaS / GovTech Software

Position Type: New Role

About the Opportunity

Our client, a private equity–backed government-focused software company, is seeking an experienced Finance Consultant to support their finance function through a period of rapid change and integration. Reporting directly to the Interim CFO (with close exposure to the incoming CFO), you will be the senior hands-on resource driving critical reporting, budgeting, and forecasting projects while relieving pressure on a lean, overstretched finance team.

You’ll work across multiple entities and systems (QuickBooks, NetSuite, Excel, Salesforce) to build and streamline consolidated reporting for a very engaged PE sponsor and executive team. This opportunity is ideal for a consultant who enjoys rolling up their sleeves in high-intensity, post-transaction environments—fixing models, tightening month-end processes, and getting usable information into the hands of decision-makers quickly. You’ll be joining a committed group that includes a long-tenured Director of Finance and capable but junior analysts and accountants, and you’ll have an immediate, visible impact from day one.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a senior, hands-on resource to the Interim CFO, taking ownership of priority finance projects and deliverables.
  • Enhance and rebuild existing Excel-based budget and forecast models to be more efficient, reliable, and user-friendly.
  • Break down the board-approved corporate budget into detailed departmental budgets for each executive function (e.g., Sales, HR, Product/Development), including allocations and assumptions.
  • Develop and maintain monthly budget vs. actual reporting packages at both corporate and departmental levels, including variance analysis to support review meetings with executives.
  • Support the creation, refinement, and partial automation of the monthly “data pack” for the board and PE sponsor, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Assist in accelerating and stabilizing the monthly close process across multiple entities (Cleargov on QuickBooks and Gravity on NetSuite), focusing on streamlining key activities.
  • Identify and implement process and Excel automation opportunities within month-end, revenue recognition, and reporting workflows to free up capacity for the internal team.
  • Work with existing finance team members (Director of Finance, Financial Analyst, Senior Staff Accountant) to rework, document, and standardize models and procedures.
  • Support ad hoc financial analysis and reporting requests from the PE firm and senior leadership, including scenario analysis and data pulls.
  • Contribute to US GAAP compliance efforts, including project work around ASC 606, specifically aligning commission capitalization/amortization practices across entities.
  • Pull and reconcile data from key systems (e.g., Salesforce, NetSuite, QuickBooks) into consolidated Excel models for analysis and reporting.
  • Prepare and maintain project lists, priorities, and timelines for finance process improvements as agreed with the Interim CFO.
  • Provide input and transition support to the incoming permanent VP Finance / CFO, ensuring continuity of models, files, and documentation.

What You Bring

  • Proven experience as a senior Finance Consultant, Director-level FP&A professional, or equivalent, with a strong track record in project-based work in high-pressure environments.
  • Significant hands-on experience in budgeting, forecasting, and management reporting, preferably in multi-entity or post-acquisition settings.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including comfort with complex models, pivot tables, data structuring, and practical automation/efficiency enhancements.
  • Strong background in month-end close support and financial reporting, with the ability to diagnose bottlenecks and recommend pragmatic process improvements.
  • Experience in SaaS and/or technology businesses with recurring revenue and services components, and solid understanding of relevant KPIs and drivers.
  • Working knowledge of US GAAP, including practical exposure to ASC 606 (revenue recognition) and related commission capitalization/amortization considerations.
  • Experience working with ERP and source systems such as NetSuite, QuickBooks, and Salesforce, and integrating data from multiple systems into Excel-based reporting.
  • Demonstrated success supporting or interacting with private equity sponsors and responding to frequent, time-sensitive information requests.
  • Comfort operating in a lean, under-resourced finance function where priorities shift and deliverables must be met under tight deadlines.
  • Hands-on, “roll up your sleeves” mindset—willing and able to perform tasks at all levels (from detailed journal-level work and payroll-related entries to executive-ready analysis).
  • Excellent analytical skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently in a fully remote setting while maintaining clear communication and alignment with the Interim CFO and finance team.
