The Opportunity
A growing law firm is seeking a Controller to serve as a strategic partner to its leadership team. This role is critical to ensuring financial accuracy, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency. You’ll oversee the full accounting cycle, manage trust accounts with precision, and deliver financial insights that empower leadership to make data-driven decisions. With visibility across the business, you will have the opportunity to shape financial processes, improve reporting, and play a key role in the firm’s continued growth.
Key Responsibilities
Audit & Controls
- Maintain strong internal controls and ensure accuracy across all accounting functions
- Oversee trust account transactions and compliance with the Law Society of Ontario
- Manage intercompany transactions, journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations
- Establish and continuously improve accounting processes, including month-end close
Treasury & Operations
- Manage day-to-day banking relationships and corporate credit card administration
- Oversee accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll functions
Financial Reporting
- Deliver timely and accurate financial reporting (P&L, Balance Sheet, KPI reports)
- Conduct revenue, margin, and trend analyses, along with variance commentary
- Review balance sheet reconciliations and ensure technical accuracy under ASPE
- Provide private reporting and technical accounting research
- Develop and enhance KPI frameworks
Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A)
- Lead budgeting and forecasting processes, including expense forecasts and financial modelling
- Prepare rolling cash flow forecasts and profitability analyses by practice area, attorney, and client
- Provide actionable insights to support growth, efficiency, and cost management
Tax
- Oversee Canadian corporate tax compliance and filings
- Manage sales tax reporting and compliance
Required Skills
- Comprehensive knowledge of full cycle accounting, including trust accounting and Law Society regulations
- Experience in financial reporting, revenue and margin analysis, and private reporting
- Strong FP&A skills: budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
- In-depth understanding of internal controls and process improvements
- CPA designation required
- Experience with QuickBooks (or similar accounting software)
- Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, data analysis)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to build strong working relationships with partners and cross-functional teams
